London Gazette 19.4.1945 No. 5440989 Sergeant (acting Robert Cuthbert Wherry, The South Wales Borderes (Redruth) The Recommendation states 'N. Burma Campaign 1944. from 9 Nov 44, during the operations N. of Pinwe L/Cpl. Wherry's Bn was the leading Bn in the Bde. On 14 Nov. 44 the enemy launched a series of counter-attacks upon the Bn posn. During one of these counter-attacks the enemy succeeded in establishing an MMG in a posn which threatened part of the Bn perimeter. Two attacks on the succeeding day failed to dislodge the enemy MMG. L/Cpl. Wherry, although a tradesman in HQ Coy, at once volunteered for a patrol to clear the MMG. During this attack the patrol Comd. was badly wounded, his body remaining under heavy MMG. fire. L/Cpl. Wherry immediately charged the enemy position killing three, and routing the remainder. His resolute action cleared the enemy post and enabled the patrol Comd. to be evacuated.'
