Adams R.A.F.V.R.), mounted as worn; with related group of seven miniature awards; recipient's Pilot's Flying Log books (2) (1.7.1942-31.9.1944), (1.11.1944-15.4.1947); Royal Air Force Note Book for Workshop & Laboratory Records; D.F.C. 'As pilot and Captain of aircraft, this officer has completed a very large number of sorties during which he has attacked most of the enemy's heavily defended targets. He has invariably displayed a high degree of skill, courage and determination and his example has proved most inspiring. On a recent occasion, Flight Lieutenant Adams piloted an aircraft detailed for a mine-laying mission. In spite of intense fire from the shore batteries and from armed ships, Flight Lieutenant Adams executed his task with great precision.' A.F.C. London Gazette 3.4.1945 MID London Gazette 14.1.1944 Flight Lieutenant John Frederick Wilson Adams D.F.C., A.F.C.; Acting Flying Officer 1943; Flight Lieutenant 1944; flew a total of 49 Sorties: First Operational Tour (30 Sorties) with 97 Squadron (11.5.1941 - 15.5.1941) and 83 Squadron (Hampdens) (14.7.1941 - 12.8.1941) and again with 97 Squadron (Manchesters and Lancasters) (25.8.1941 - 11.7.1942). Second Operational Tour with 49 Squadron at Fiskerton (Lancasters) (19.2.1944 - 19.5.1944), operations include the very successful raid on Toulouse 5.4.1944 when an aircraft factory was completely destroyed - "marking" done by 617 Squadron led by Wing Commander Leonard Cheshire, also Schweinfurt 26.4.1944, the night raid during which Sergeant N.C. Jackson won his Victoria Cross.
