STRAITS SETTLEMENTS Early Letters and Handstamps Malacca 1817 (16 Dec.) three page autograph letter written and signed by William Farquhar (1771-1839) in Malacca to Major De Havilland; the letter refers to the submitting of a petition to the Court of Directors of the East India Company, the deal of the "Mynheers" in taking possession of Malacca and the possibility of war with the "Marattas" in India Estimate S$ 2,000-2,500 Note: William Farquhar, nicknamed "the Rajah of Malacca", arrived there in 1795, and while still a junior officer in the Madras Engineers served as Resident from 1803-18, amassing during this time his magnificent collection of natural history drawings.
