VIRGIN ISLANDS Early Letters and Handstamps 1815 (23 Dec.) entire letter to Kendal, rated "2/3 PP" and showing underinked strike of the"tortola/23 dec 15" d.s. (Type HS2b) and a largely fine strike of the very rare circular-framed "paid/to/england" h.s. in red; a little soiled though a very rare cover showing the sole recorded example of the "Paid to England" handstamp used from the Virgin Islands. Photo Estimate £ 800-1,000 Note: Two strikes of a similar handstamp are recorded from Jamaica on letters of 1810 and 1811. These show a large capital letter "P" and are struck in violet. The writer forwards a plea from a slave who requests that he can purchase himself for the lowest price. He is old, his health is in a bad way and he is afraid of being sold to a hard master
