VIRGIN ISLANDS Early Letters and Handstamps 1796 (2 Mar.) entire letter to Perth and redirected to Dunkeld, variously rated and showing a largely fine strike of the rare "tortola" handstamp (Type HS1) alongside circular-framed "perth" in red, London transit c.d.s. and Scottish Bishop mark in red on reverse; vertical crease and some stains on face panel though a rare cover. Photo Estimate £ 500-600 Note: Interesting contents referring to the islands of Tortola, Grenada and St. Vincent being peaceful, the latter having had a "severe engagement lately in which we have lost a good many men and some Officers but noting to what the Sans Cullotes have lost who when they found they could not carry off their killed and wounded put them all in a house together and set fire to it and burnt them (dead and alive) to ashes"
