SUDAN Campaign Mail The Orde Correspondence The following twelve lots are from Captain R.C. Orde to his wife in England. He wrote the first letter soon after his arrival in Egypt and continued a fairly regular correspondence until he was back in Alexandria and due to leave for England, covering a period from October 1884 to August 1885. 1885 (15 Apr.) envelope (faults) with letter headed "Tani 9 April", marked "Active Service no stamp", showing small "dongola" c.d.s. partly overstruck by boxed "T" and "21/2" h.s.; the postscript of the letter mentions General Gordon's death and his head being cut off and hung on a pole in Omdurman.
