SUDAN Campaign Mail The Orde Correspondence The following eleven lots are from Captain R.C. Orde to his wife in England. He wrote the first letter soon after his arrival in Egypt and continued a fairly regular correspondence until he was back in Alexandria and due to leave for England, covering a period from October 1884 to August 1885. 1884 (12 Oct.) - 1885 (16 Oct.) envelopes (10, virtually all in poor and or damaged condition) and letters (15, some of which belong to the envelopes) covering the whole period he was in the Sudan; datestamps include Dongola, Korti and Wadi Halfa (5); the letters are full of interest and include 1st Dec. 1884 at Tangut giving details of taking charge of boats and Dongolese troops, 15th March at Korti with details of river manouvres and the writer suffering from a diseased foot and may have to go home on sick leave, 4th April from Tani with details of large crocodile caught and the sighting of five of the Mahdi's men, 31 May from Dulgo with details of command after journey of 250 miles and mail delays, 11th July from Dal and move to Sarkamatto, and 18th July from Dal where now in command of whole station with news of the theft of kit and rifle and talks of Kourbash and floggings.
