SUDAN Egyptian Adhesives used in the Sudan Suakin 1888 envelope registered to Vienna, bearing 1888 5m. red block of six (on reverse) and a vertical pair tied by bi-lingual "sawakin" c.d.s., showing registration h.s. and, on reverse, Suez, Alexandria and arrival datestamps. The "envelope" was made by Slatin Pasha from a portion of his shirt when a prisoner in the Dervish Camp. It contained a letter to his sister, carried in a quilt by an Arab to Kitchener, then Governor of Sawakin, who applied the adhesives and forwarded the letter. A magnificent item of major importance and a great exhibition piece. Photo Estimate £ 2,000-2,500 Note: Major-General Sir Rudolf von Slatin G.C.V.O. (1857-1932) explored the Kordofan area of the Sudan in 1878, was Governor of Darfur Province under General Gordon, and was captured by the Dervishes in 1884. He was prisoner for eleven years. After the defeat of the Devishes by Kitchener in 1898, he became Inspector-General of the Sudan 1900-1914. provenance: Dr William Byam, 1961
