An Immediate Second War Military Medal for the Final Advance into GermanyMilitary Medal , G.VI.R. (6456478 Cpl. J.F. Sheehaw. Midd'x. R.), about extremely fine Estimate £ 700-800 M.M. London Gazette 23.8.1945 No. 6456478 Corporal John Francis Sheehan, The Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge's Own) (London, S.W. 13). The Recommendation states: 'Near Uhlorn on 19 Apr 45, Cpl Sheehan was the Bren Gunner in a fighting patrol from 3 Pl, A Coy, 8th Bn. The Middlesex Regiment (DCO), which set out to locate and wipe out an enemy post, and to rescue a wounded comrade known to be near the post. When the enemy post was found, Cpl Sheehan with complete disregard for his personal safety, and utter contempt for the enemy, used his Bren gun so effectively that the enemy position was soon captured, and the wounded comrade located. Some form of stretcher being required, Cpl Sheehan without hesitation dashed across the open, in full view of a farmhouse known to be occupied by the enemy, to collect a door on which, subsequently, his comrade was successfully evacuated. Throughout this affray Cpl Sheehan's inspired conduct contributed greatly to the success of this patrol.' Recommended by Lieutenant General Horrocks and confirmed by Field Marshal B. L. Montgomery.
