R.); 1939-45 Star; France and Germany Star; Africa Star; War Medal; General Service, G.VI.R., one clasp, Palestine (C/Sjt), Army Long Service & G.C., G.V.R., Regular Army (4114301 Sjt.), extremely fine (7) Estimate £ 500-1,000 M.M. London Gazette 7.11.1936 No. 4114301 C.Q.M.S. C. Brashaw, Cheshire Regiment. 'On the night of 18/19th July, 1936, C.Q.M.S. Brashaw was in charge of the Haifa-Tulkarm Patrol Train. Returning from Tulkarm he noticed something burning on the line. He ordered the train to stop; as it was doing so it derailed. He immediately had all lights extinguished. Fire was opened on the Patrol from both sides of the line. The fire was returned, and with the aid of Verey Lights, C.Q.M.S. Brashaw controlled the fire. The Arabs were eventually driven off. Under his direction the crew of the Patrol Train took up tactical positions so as to protect the wreck and salvage party. The derailment took place at 22.55 hours. C.Q.M.S. Brashaw remained with half his men to protect and give assistance to the salvage party and he eventually returned to Tulkarm Staiton at 14.30hrs, 19th July. During the exchange of fire between the patrol and the Arabs, a bomb exploded under the rear truck; afterwards two live bombs were found under the wrecked train. By his handling of the train, C.Q.M.S. Brashaw avoided a complete derailment, probably resulting in loss of life.' Lieutenant Brashaw, serving with the East Yorkshire Regiment, was made Prisoner of War, and in March 1945 was listed as held at Oflag 79, Brunswick (P.O.W. no. 1362). In 1946 he claimed replacement awards (see copy of Issue Voucher dated August 1946 with the lot). A G.V.R. 1st type M.M. with fixed suspension was mistakenly issued instead of the correct second, crowned head, type. The lower rank of Private, taken from the same Instruction, was also a mistake.
