A Rare Lake Nyassa D.S.M. Group of Five to Acting Chief Petty Officer E.C. Mitchell, Royal Navy Distinguished Service Medal, G.V.R. (204906 E.C. Mitchell, P.O. H.M.S. Gwendolen); 1914-15 Star (P.O. R.N.); British War and Victory Medals; Naval Long Service & G.C., G.V.R. (Act. C.P.O. H.M.S Hyacinth), very fine, mounted as worn, with letter from recipient (5) Estimate £ 3,000-3,500 D.S.M. London Gazette 2.6.1916 . Lake Nyassa 204906 Act. C.P.O. E.C. Mitchell H.M.S. Gwendolen Acting Chief Petty Officer E.C. Mitchell, D.S.M., was on the 'Pegasus', which was sunk off Zanzibar, a month after the outbreak of the Great War, with reported losses of around half the crew. Some of the survivors, including Mitchell, were sent to reinforce and transform H.M.S. Gwendolen from a Missionary Steamer into a Gunboat; with the aim of contesting German supremacy on Lake Nyassa. The Gwendolen, despite heavy opposition from the German shore batteries managed to destroy the German shipping and thus gain control of the Lake.
