The Sword of General George Congreve CB An 1831 Pattern General Officer's sword with 321/2 in. damascened pipe-backed blade inscribed Solingen Damask, etched with foliate decoration and trophies (traces of gilding at the forte), mameluke hilt with regulation device on crosspiece, and grip with ivory scales (gilding rubbed, no scabbard) Estimate £ 220-300 Note: General Congreve was born in 1807 and commissioned into the 29th (Worcestershire) Regiment in 1825. He commanded the regiment during the Sikh wars at the battles of Ferozeshah, Chillianwallah and Goojerat, and took part in the Indian mutiny campaign. He was promoted Major General in 1860 but died at Simla the following year. He was the great-uncle of Walter Norris Congreve VC.
