London Gazette 26.6.1902 Lieutenant Colonel Howard William Smith, Hampshire Regiment Colonel Howard William Smith, C.B.,(1858-1905), entered the 67th Foot as Second Lieutenant 1879 and served in the Afghanistan Campaign 1879-80; accompanied the Burma Expedition 1885-87 and 1889-90 (Mentioned in Despatches 2.9.1887); during the South African War 1899-1902 Colonel Smith Commanded 2nd Battalion of his Regiment and was appointed Commandant at Komati Poort and Johannesburg (Mentioned in Despatches 17.6.1902, C.B. 1902)
