Lot: 669

Gibraltar 1936 (9 Mar.) envelope to Halfway Tree P.O., Jamaica, bearing 1931-33 11/2d. cancelled with "Travel Key" machine d.s. and showing, in lower left corner, a superb strike of the very rare boxed "(do not tax)/special naval mail" cachet, fine arrival c.d.s. on reverse. Photo Estimate £ 600-700 Note: On 1 July 1932 the postage rate from Gibraltar to the U.K. went up from 11/2d. to 2d. The Fleet were accustomed to paying the Imperial rate of 11/2d. A suggestion was made that the Navy should be granted a special privilege of prepaying their letters at the 11/2d. rate. After much correspondence between the Colonial Secretary, The Colonial Postmaster and others it was agreed that the reduction in rate would stand and a handstamp to verify this decision was made up. A copy of a recent letter detailing these events accompanies the lot
