Mack suggests that this remarkable piece was struck by Robert de Ferrers, earl of Derby, during the period of Stephen's captivity in the summer of 1141. Walkelin, the moneyer of Derby, is referred to in contemporary deeds, and three examples of this piece were found at Ashby-de-la-Zouch, a few miles south of Derby, in 1788 with other coins of Stephen.
