James VI (1567-1625), Rider, 4.97g., seventh coinage, 1594, king in armour and holding sword, riding right, 1594 below, iacobvs 6 d g r scotorvm, no stops by date, rev., crowned shield, spero meliora, m.m. quatrefoil (B 4, fig. 954; S.5458), lightly waterworn, now with a pleasing old tone, good very fine Estimate £ 1,000-1,250 provenance: Spink Numismatic Circular, November 1943, no.22620 £7-10-0 A H Baldwin, writing to R C Lockett in 1916 concerning a James VI Rider in the Alexander Mann sale, noted 'Quite a few are being found on the Norfolk coast. I have seen ten or so'. A significant number of Riders seem to be old sea salvage coins from this source
