James I, third coinage, Half-laurel, 4.46g., third bust, neat laureate bust left, rev., long cross fleury over crowned square shield, m.m. rose (Schneider -; N.2117 var.; S.2641), double struck on reverse shield, otherwise an excellent example on a very full flan, good very fine or better, rare Estimate £ 800-1,000 provenance: Spink Numismatic Circular, June 1943, no.20477 £5-0-0 North only lists the existence of first bust and fourth bust James I half-laurels, and only the first and fourth busts are represented in the Schneider collection. This is undoubtedly a third bust half-laurel. The workmanship and lettering are of finer quality, the portrait larger and the gaze more elevated than on coins with the fourth bust. Most distinctively the cloak falls from the king's shoulder in one plain end and one folded end exactly as on the third bust laurels, on the fourth bust the cloak has two plain ends.
