James I, third coinage, Laurel, 8.80g., large laureate bust left with unusual hair en brosse, mark of value behind, reads mag bri fran et hib, rev., long cross fleury over crowned square shield, facciam eos in gentem vnam, reversed N's on both sides, m.m. spur rowel (Schneider -; N.2111var.; S.2637 var.), on a small flan, filed on edge and rather crimped, about very fine Estimate £ 400-500 provenance: Spink Numismatic Circular, January 1943, no.17733 £5-5-0 This strange piece is a hybrid of the first and second busts. It is of good style, apart from the abnormal treatment of the hair and the reversed N's, and of good weight. An example from the same bust puncheon, but from different dies and with reversed N's on the reverse only, was sold in Spink Auction 22, lot 994. Another, with the same legend and reversed N's, formed lot 1068 in the 1951 Lingford sale.
