Cape of Good Hope 1847-49 correspondence of twelve entire letters written by Ensign Robert Whitle of the 91st. Regiment whilst on a voyage to South Africa and during his time there, mostly to his father in Blackburn; the first written on board the "Ship Asiatic. Bay of Biscay", the others from Cape Town (2), "Steamer Phoenix at Sea", Fort Beaufort (3), "Camp 35 miles from Bloemfontein" (written the day after the battle of Boomplaats with details of the writer's part in the engagement), "Camp Drivers Hill" and Fort England (3, the last without outer cover), various postal markings including double-oval framed "general post office/Crown/cape town" and Ship Letter handstamps for Cove, Falmouth, Folkstone and Plymouth. Also included are an 1826 entire letter from Capt. Richard Manners in India to Capt. Whitle (Ensign Whitle's father) in London and redirected to Cheshire with "Postage to London Not Paid" h.s. in red, and an 1849 letter and envelope from Capt. Whitle to his son in Grahams Town.
