Louisville and Northern Railway and Lighting Co. Certificate for 50 Shares at $10, 8 July 1909. No. B 502. Signed by Samuel Insull as president. Insull began as Thomas Edison's personal secretary, advanced to Vice President of Edison General Electric Co., then went to Chicago as head of the Chicago electric franchise, where he eventually became president of the Commonwealth Edison. He built a financial empire, forging a near monopoly of the city's electric business. It all collapsed with the 1929 Wall Street Crash. He fled to Europe in 1932 to escape prosecution but was extradited and tried for fraud and embezzlement three times, being acquitted each time, but losing his vast wealth in the process. Electric trolley car at center, radiant light bulbs far left and right, orange-red borders. Diamond cut cancel. Very Fine.
