(1688) American Planation Token - 1/24 Part Reals. Tin. Tower mint. Newman type 4-E. Equestrian figure of James II right, rev. Crowned cruciform shields of England, Scotland, France and Ireland. Found in Billingsgate, River Thames area, London. Riverine corrosion, salved, Good. The obverse design and most of the legend clear; snippets of the reverse discernible. From the Collection of the noted archaeologist Ivor Noel Hume, OBE (1927-2017), chief archaeologist at Colonial Williamsburg and director of its archaeology program. This specimen was sent to Eric P. Newman by Hume for examination in 1962, and the typed letter sent by Newman to Hume when Newman returned the token is included. Also included are two other American Plantation tokens with no design nor legend visible, also found in Billingsgate.
