Charles IX. (born 1550, king of France 1560 to his death 1574). The penultimate monarch of the House of Valois; ascended the throne at the age of 10 after the death of his sickly brother François II, his reign was dominated by his mother Catherine de'Medici and known for the Wars of Religion and the infamous St. Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572; died of tuberculosis and without legitimate male issue, succeeded by his brother Henri III, whose own death in 1589 without legitimate issue allowed the ascendency of the House of Bourbon as the French royal dynasty.
Letter signed "Charles" as King. Partial vellum, 1 page, dated November 1566, untranslated and likely a legal document. Horizontal and vertical folds. The king signs bottom left, much below at right is the signature of an official. Rent in the fold line just before the official's mark. Pencil notation in blank panel of verso.
