Victoria (1837-1901), A Contemporary Forgery of a Sovereign, 1872 ["Die 29"], struck in Heavy Gilt Platinum from false dies, young head left, rev. crowned 'normal' shield in wreath, die number below, edge milled, 8.19g, 6h [Spink XRF: 70.81% Platinum; 25.87% Gold; 3.32% Copper] (cf. DNW, 9 December 2003, lot 36; cf. EGC II, 1173; cf. Spink 3853B), a scratch across neck, the gilding heavily extant, struck details bolder than very fine, a curious and deceptive forgery in the immediate years after the discovery of 'worthless' Platinum!
