Great Britain. Churchill - "1940 Club" Commemorative Medal, 1959. Silver gilt, 57.3mm. 81.1 gms. By Frank Kovacs. Spink and Son, Ltd, London. Bust facing slightly left after the 1941 Karsh photographic portrait; 1940 CLUB / CHURCHILL. MASTER MEMBER / BEAVERBROOK, PRESIDENT, rev. Airplane propeller at center, "TO WHOM / MUST THE / PRAISE BE GIVEN?"; MINISTRY OF AIRCRAFT PRODUCTION, spray below. Engstrom 20b. This medal was commissioned by Lord Beaverbrook in honor of Churchill and other members of the "1940 Club", which Beaverbrook organized for all those who had been close to him during his 1940-1941 tenure as Minister of Aircraft Production, a post he accepted at the urging of his old friend Churchill. The annual "1940 Club" dinner at Claridge's was one of the few functions Churchill attended regularly in his later years. The medals (struck in gold, and in silver gilt) were presented to club members by Beaverbrook at the 1959 dinner. Extremely rare, with Engstrom recording only 2 in silver gilt. Very minor friction marks. Uncirculated.
