German States. Augsburg. Susanna and the Elders. Oval Medal, ca. 1630. Silver, 38.4 x 45.9mm. By Johann Bartholomäus Holeisen (Mintmaster at Augsburg, died 1668). The innocent Susanna at her bath distraught at the advances of two older, bearded men, tree at right, rev. Eight-line German legend, outer scrollwork. Suspension loop removed at 12:00. Forster 34.
The Apocrypha of the Old Testament tells the story of the beautiful and godly Jewess Susanna who, while bathing, rejects the immoral proposals of two Jewish elders and is accused by them of adultery with a young man in revenge. Sentenced to death by the congregation, Susanna is rescued by the young wise Daniel, who convicts the two elders of false testimony in separate interrogations and has them executed instead. The motif of "Susanna in the bath" has been used frequently in painting since the Renaissance (including Rubens, Rembrandt, Böcklin).
An About Very Fine example illustrating the transmission of Italianate artistic styles to Northern Europe.
