A RECTANGULAR LEAD PLAQUETTE OF JEWISH PEDDLERS OR HARESKIN DEALERS
France (Alsace) or Germany, Ca. 1800
89 X 66mm, curvate sides, integral loop. Half-length figures of three peddlers wearing tricorn hats, one with a spear across his shoulder with a sack suspended. Apparently cast from an ivory original in the Israel Museum (vide: "Les Juifs d'Alsace", 1991, pl.16). This composition was quite popular in northern Europe at the end of the 18th and early 19th Century as attested to various prints and paintings produced in Germany, France, and the Netherlands.
