AUSTRIAN, AFTER WENZEL JAMNITZER (1507/8-1585)
A Set of Six Virtues. Gilt Silver Appliqués. Each 51-53mm high. An incomplete set of virtues that duplicates a group from the Arca de San Victor at the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales in Madrid, made by Jamnitzer in 1570 as a bridal chest for the marriage of Anna of Austria to Philip II of Spain. Each piece stamped with the Austrian control mark "F" for Brünn (now Brno, Czech Republic), 1806-1807. Published - This Set, Ingrid Weber Deutsche Niederländsche und Französische Renaissanceplaketten 1500-1650 (no. 240, 1,2,4,5,7,8). Extremely Fine.
This may be a contemporary preliminary set cast to work out design details as the sword wielded by the figure of Justice is longer and straighter on the finished casket. The crispness of the details and the finesse of the casting quality certainly argue in favor of a contemporary production (aftercasts would not display such delicacy). In a fitted 19th Century case. Ex Velinghuis Loeckx (Ghent), September 6, 2016. Ex Johannes Jantzen (1887-1972) Collection.
