Lot: 162

ITALIAN OR SPANISH, late 16th Century
Adoration of the Shepherds. Rectangular plaquette, 1590. Bronze, approx. 5 ½ x 7 ½". Shepherds and the Virgin Mary gather around to worship the Christ Child before a classical temple, the entablature inscribed GLORIA.IN.EXCELSIS.DEO, date 1590 below the Infant Christ. The legend is a variant to the PARM INVENT inscribed casts dated 1561, 1580 and 1586. Although the origin of the reliefs has been ascribed to Gian Federigo Bonzagna, called Federigo Parmense (1508-1588), this idea has been rejected by a number of scholars. For a detailed study of this popular relief, see Michael Riddick, "An Adoration and Lamentation of Iberian-Italian origin", Renaissance Bronze, March 29, 2020. Pierced. An Extremely Fine old cast. Framed in an attractive old wood frame with bronzed borders, 10 x 12".
