Auction: 390 - Renaissance Plaquettes and Commemorative Medals featuring the Neil A. Goodman Collection - e-Auction
Lot: 155
ITALIAN, Venice, third quarter of the 15th Century
Saint Lorenzo Giustiniani (1381-1456), first Patriarch of Venice. Silhouette plaquette. Bronze, 71 x 100mm. This specimen is finer than the Berlin example of the same measurement as illustrated in Hill's Corpus (No. 1145), while three different techniques were employed to add texture to its surfaces. Although Hill declines to endorse the identity of the sitter, referring instead to it as "Ecclesiastic Unknown", it is certainly Giustiniani as can be seen in several painted portraits, such as the one in Bergamo, in Milan's Museo Bagatti Valsecchi, and the large full-figure one by Bellini in Venice's Accademia. Pierced (filled) at top and bottom. An Extremely Fine contemporary or early cast. Ex Meister & Sonntag, Auction 9, May 26, 2010, lot 518.
