ITALIAN (Padua, 1500-1525)
Scipione di Teofilo Buzzacarini [or Buzakreni] (died 1558). Medal. Bronze, 47.2mm. SIPIO.BVZAKRENVS.PAT., youthful bust right, rev. D O N E C, laureate and draped figure three-quarters left holding a sceptre, long flowing tassels. This medal is cast from the specimen illustrated in Hill's Corpus (542); only two specimens have been recorded. The sitter became a Mantuan citizen in 1525 and was chamberlain of honor to Marquis Federico II Gonzaga. Between 1545 and 1551, Buzzacarini donated commemorative inscriptions and had a family tomb built at the Basilica di Sant'Andrea. This medal, though, dates to before his Mantuan period as he is referred to as PAT(avinus) - "Paduan" in the obverse legend. The reverse may depict him as laureate, but the legend remains undeciphered. Bruises on edge. Otherwise, a Very Fine old cast.
