ITALIAN, 16th Century
Pope Julius II (1503-1513) - Giuliano della Rovere. Medal. Bronze, 35.5mm. IVLIVS LIGVR PAPA SECVNDVS, Bust right wearing zucchetto and mantum, rev. Justice and Abundance clasping hands, OSCVLATE / SVNT in ex. Venuti believed the reverse figures of Justice and Abundance referred to the reconciliation between the Colonna and Orsini families in 1511 (p.53, no. xiv), but the specimens seen by Hill seemed "comparatively modern", and Hill concluded that "it may be doubted whether it is contemporary with Julius (Corpus 877). He records only a single cast specimen. The portrait type appears on pieces associated with Pier Maria Serbaldi da Pescia, engraver at the Roman mint, 1499-1522. This example here appears to be cast. Scratches reverse field. Very Fine.
