Italy - VENICE or MANTUA, Late 16TH Century.
Pompeia, wife of Julius Caesar. Oval plaque. Bronze, 98 x 118mm. POMPEIA IVLII CAESAR VXOR, Bust left, her hair adorned with two rows of pearls, wearing a brocaded dress, incised floral devices in field. Gaius Julius was Dictator not emperor, but he can be seen as the Imperial progenitor and this plaquette is related to a series of Roman emperors and their wives (the emperors based on eleven paintings by Titian [the twelfth by Giulio Romano] that were once in the Gonzaga collection [now destroyed]. The artist(s) responsible for the depiction of the wives has never been identified. A Very Fine old cast.
