GALEAZZO MONDELLA, called MODERNO (1467-1528)
Lion Hunt. Round plaquette, Verona ca. 1504-1510. Silver, 77.8mm. On rocky ground, a naked man defends himself with his shield against an attack by a lion, two mounted warriors before raising their swords to strike the beast, while a warrior standing behind does the same. Pope Hennessy 178; Bargello 217. For other casts with stippled ground, which may suggest 17th century workmanship, vide: Bargello & Scaglia [Rossi v.40, pp. 122, tav. XXXVI]. Some scratches on the back, casting flaw at 8:00. An Extremely Fine later cast.
