LODOVICO LEONI (1536/7-1612)
Sperone Speroni (1500-1588). Medal, Rome, ca. 1574-8. Uniface. Bronze, 65mm. SPERON SPERONI, Bearded bust right wearing gown with a high collar, cross and academic cap. Presumably cast while both the artist and the sitter were in Rome in the 1570s. Bòrner 918, Attwood Italian Medals 304a, Pl. 70, pp. 200. A noted Paduan humanist, Speroni, who earned early renown by lecturing on philosophy at the university while in his early 20s. He was in Rome from 1572-1578 before returning to Padua. Leoni was a fellow Paduan, active largely in Rome.
He moved to Rome in 1574 to take office at the Papal Mint, which lasted until 1586. In addition to being a painter, he was sought after as a maker of colored portraits in wax, which were commissioned by many prominent Romans, although none have ever been identified
