Alfonso V d'Aragona (1396-1458), King of Naples and Sicily. Medal, Naples (dated by Hill to Alfonso's death in) 1458. Bronze, 75mm. ALFONSVS.REX.REGIBVS.IMPERANS.ET.BELLORVM.VICTOR. Mantled bust right set on a crown, wearing a cuirass decorated with two winged figures holding a medallion and a centaur carrying a nymph, rev. VICTOREM REGNI MARS ET BELLONA CORONANT, Alfonso seated ¾ right on cippus decorated with sphinxes, holding sword upright, being crowned by Mars and Bellona, signed on the under-slope of the exergue: CHRISTOPHORVS HIERIMIA. The obverse bust on a crown is copied by di Geremia from Pisanello's Venator Intrepidus medal made ca. 1449. The medal's victory motif alludes to the conquest of Naples in 1442 from the Angevins and the celebrations afterward. One of only two signed pieces by di Geremia. An Extremely Fine old cast.
