OPON/TION, Ajax advancing right, nude except for Corinthian helmet, with sword and shield, shield between legs and decorated with serpent, ivy leaf showing veins between legs, broken spear upon rocky ground below, 12.15g (Traité III, 426, Pl. CCVI, 15 same reverse die; Corpus Group 12, 119g; SNG Lockett 1695; SNG Copenhagen - [cf. 47]; cf. BMC, pp. 2, no. 7 var. {shield between legs}; BCD Lokroi/Phokis 44 var.; Wartenberg 5), even softness to proudest features, otherwise well-centred on a fuller, round flan, lightly toned, a thorougly pleasing very fine, a more unusual die pairing with the 'veiny' ivy leaf between legs
