Margaret Carey, was the wife of the politican Thomas Carey. After his death in 1634 she married Sir Edward Herbert, Attorney-General to Charles I and Keeper of the Great Seal to Charles II. Together they had Philadelphia, Lady Lyttelton and Elizabeth, Lady Avalon. Her portrait was painted by celebrated Royal Painter Anthony van Dyck in 1636, and later engraved by the English engraver William Faithorne between 1650 and 1660. Her similarity to Henrietta Maria was such that Sir Walter Scott firmly believed her likeness was that of the Queen when he chose to hang a reduced portrait of her at Abbotsford house in 1822
