Dr R T Cassel, Glendining, 3-4 December 1924, lot 223 - in very good preservation, and of extreme rarity - £16.10.0 [Thellusson]

Pioneering die study by Webb-Ware has identified a tight pairing of four dies, typically delineated by the expansion 'DEI' rather than 'DI' in the obverse legend. This probably identifies these (and the present specimen) as a very late Edward IV issue, although the aspiration of owning a coin struck for the incarcerated 'Princes in the Tower' will render this an enduringly popular type, as evidenced by the incredible price realisations witnessed for this very coin in the 1920s and 1930s.
