Germany. Judaica. Cologne Synagogue, 1861. Medal. Bronze, 59.7mm. By Jacques Wiener. View of the exterior of the Conservative Synagogue in der Glockengasse, rev. Interior view, Hebrew legends at sides: "Abraham Oppenheim built a House of God for the People of Cologne"; "It was rededicated on the 23rd of Elul. Remember that God is Good." This magnificent temple was sacked and burned by the Nazis during Kristellnacht 1938 and never rebuilt. Cologne's modern Opera House now sits on the Glockengasse Synagogue site.
