Northeast Italy. The Adriatic Veneti. AR Drachm, late 2nd-early 1st Century BC. 2.42 gms. Wreathed head of Artemis right, chevron in annulet eye, hair in rolls, rev. Lion right with hooking talon claws, series of "horseshoes" above imitating legend. The Adriatic Veneti inhabited Northeast Italy in what is now The Veneto region. Numismatically, they are often erroneously listed as Celtic, when they were actually a non-Celtic Indo-European people. They spoke Venetic which appears to have shared many similarities with Latin and other Italic languages, although it also had some affinities with other Indo-European languages, primarily Germanic and Celtic.
