William III (1694-1702), Shilling, 1696-y, York, third laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, script y below, rev. crowned shields cruciform, five strings to harp, angles plain, edge obliquely milled, 5.69g, 6h (Spink 3510; ESC 1193 [1090] [R6]; BNJ, 26 February 1947, pp. 239, no. 1; Jackson-Kent [SNC, 1961] 15; Jackson-Kent [1965] 179 = Hamilton [1979] 238 - 'exceedingly rare, 2 or 3 known'; Manville [1980] -), a salvage coin, probably from the wreck of HMS Association, with resultant surface porosity, otherwise the struck details a bolder fine to very fine, and long considered to be a mule, of the highest rarity
