Charles II (1660-1685), Shilling, 1666, first laureate and draped bust variety right, with two even central laurel leaves, stop before DEI, rev. no stop after HIB, crowned shields cruciform, five strings to harp, cyphers in angles, edge straight milled, 5.87g, 6h (Spink 3372; Bull - [ESC 1025A - R5]; Montagu [1896] -; Murdoch [1903] -; Parsons [1954] -; Jackson-Kent [1965] -; Woodhouse [1968] -; Hamilton [1979] -; Manville [1980] -; Pegg [1980] -), hidden from commerce since at least 1960 and subsequently delisted by Bull, entirely wanting from all private and insitutional British numismatic cabinets, lightly toned, very fine, of truly mythic rarity, in NGC 'Francis' holder, graded AU50 (Cert. #5878643-014)

To illustrate the exceptional rarity of this bust variety-date combination, the impressively comprehensive K W Woodhouse collection of Charles II Shillings offered through Glendining's saleroom on 11 December 1968 possessed three of the four varieties known for the 1666 issue, the 1st bust variety with elephant below (lot 321); the 'Guinea' head with elephant below (lot 322) and the second bust (lot 323), but this example was absent, as it was from the 1949, 1957 editions of English Silver Coinage
