Pioneer of women's aviation, first woman to break the sound barrier - May 18, 1953; wartime head of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) - 1943-1944; awarded DSM, DFC; one of the most prominent racing pilots of her generation, setting numerous records. Group of 15 Photos. Ca. WWII press photos -- 8 x 10 sepia-tinged of her before a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk; 10 x B&W of her within the cockpit of the P-40; ca. 1936-1937 8 x10 of her (after her marriage to Floyd Odlum, CEO of RKO); NAA 10 x 8 of her before the Staggerwing Beechcraft she flew in the 1937 Bendix Race; 1944 8 x 10 of her holding a Hamilton Standard propeller, and of her in WASP uniform; 1950's 8 x 10 of her in business attire before "business jet" (red cropping marks); and 1930's-1940's NAA group stapled at upper left - small profile, 5 x 4" before her Staggerwing, 1941, 4 x 5 before P-40, 1939 cropped to 4 x 8 of her speaking into WDAE mic, 7 x 5 and 10 x 8 of her before her altitude-record setting Staggerwing; 7 x 9 of her in coat before plane; and 7 ¼ x 9 ½ glamorous shot of her in suit (by Anne Kirby, NY).
