Lahm, Frank Samuel (Canton, Ohio 1846-December 29, 1931 Paris France). Pioneer balloonist, businessman and social figure; in poor health for five years, on the advice of doctors undertook trip to southern France, Italy and Switzerland to improve his condition; he culminated his recovery by scaling the Matterhorn I August 1881; became European representative for Remington Typewriter, residing in Paris until his death; became a balloon pilot in France 1904; founded Aero Club of Ohio in 1907; made his last balloon flight in 1929; father of aviation pioneer, the "nation's first military aviator" Frank Purdy Lahm. Pair of Letters Signed "F.S. Lahm". One page typed on NAA letterhead, Paris, April 14, 1930. Writing to NAA President, Senator Bingham, Lahm requests the particulars of that year's Gordon-Bennett Balloon Cup. "In the interest of the Cup, it is of the greatest importance that the above Clubs should send pilots this year, and I will make every effort to have them do so." Lahm signs as American Member Governing Committee Aero Club of France, member Royal Aero Club of Belgium; one page typed, Paris, May 31, 1931. Writing to the NAA seven months before his death, Lahm asks the secretary for information on that year's Gordon-Bennett Balloon Cup and comments on the erection of a monument in France per Resolution No. 4; accompanied by 3 B&W photos of Lahm's son Major General Frank P. Lahm with 1941 News Release on his being named Commander of the Gulf Coast Air Corps Training Center.
