Guggenheim, Harry Frank (1890-1971). Aviator, businessman, diplomat, publisher, philanthropist and horseman; President of the Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aeronautics; US ambassador to Cuba 1929-1933. Served on the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics 1929-1938; founder of "Newsday". Pair of Letters Signed "Harry F. Guggenheim". Both missives to Hiram Bingham, President of the NAA, both typed on US Embassy stationery. One page, Habana May 15, 1930. Writing to "Hi" he talks about Bingham's attendance at the upcoming June FAI annual conference in Paris and recommends Henri Bouché, publisher of "L'Aeronautique" as someone who could advise on finding "the right man" to head the FAI; Two pages, Habana, June 12, 1931. This time referring to Bingham as "Dear Senator", Guggenheim in reply to a request for suggestions for members of the advisory board refers Bingham to a memorandum he published called "Landing Room" which he encloses (his only copy). He goes on to say although his duties with the Foreign Service for the past two years have not allowed him as much time as he would like in pursuit of aeronautical matters "I have used my airplane as a mode of conveyance for long distance, and am I am constantly impressed on the need for emergency landing fields. In closing he urges the NAA to "give an impetus to this movement". Accompanied by 12-page typed Bio of Harry F. Guggenheim sent by his private secretary to the Editor of "National Aeronautics", Feb. 1, 1950; a 8 x 10 photo of Guggenheim's father mining magnate and aviation promoter Daniel Guggenheim (Underwood & Underwood Studios, NY); and stapled pair of International Newsreel photos of Harry F. - in suit 5 x 6 7/8 , in pilot gear 6 x8 with attached caption 'The "Flying Ambassador" Flies Home' after Guggenheim arrived at Mitchell Field, Long Island after a 12 1/2 hour flight from Havana piloted by Phillip Melville, Air Attaché of the Cuban Embassy (a few spots upper right).
