Thomas Hardy (English novelist and poet) (1840-1928) - autograph letter signed, on black-bordered mourning card (approx 4.5"x3.5") with printed address of Max Gate, Dorchester (Hardy's home), he writes of his current bout with a cold ("I am liquid-eyed still…") and notes that the newspapers "are talking about Mr. Evans's play based on the Woodlanders. I know very little about it, nor shall I, except through the press and oral news casually, having had no hand in it whatever..." Hardy had been approached for permission to adapt the Woodlanders for performance in 1889, but nothing came of the idea until A.H. Evans' play was produced by the Dorchester Debating and Dramatic Society in 1913. A wonderful note, very fine.
