Clara Barton (American nurse, founder of the American Red Cross) (1821-1912) - autograph note signed, on 4.5"x3.5" card, addressed to "my dear cousin", regretting that she was unable to visit on a recent trip through Massachusetts, and expressing hope that they would see each other over the winter, signed "yours, Clara Barton." Very fine. Serving as a hospital nurse during the American Civil War, where she was called "the angel of the battlefield," she assisted the Duchess of Baden in preparing military hospitals during the Franco-Prussian War, for which she was awarded the Gold Cross of Baden.
