World War I. Henu. April 27, 1918. Watercolor by J.E. Tindall. 6 ¾ x 9 ¾". View of a farm holding. Matted with typed narrative below: "HENU. In this area the buildings of the small farm holdings were not, as in the North, erected on the farm lands, but were all grouped together forming small hamlets. As the surrounding lands were devoid of trees or hedges, and the hamlets were thickly planted with fruit trees, these tiny villages appeared as true oases to the troops and made an unforgettable picture." The artist J.E. Tindall was likely Captain (acting Major) J.E. Tindall of the Royal Engineers who finished his service in 1919. In 1916, he served as Lieutenant with the Home Counties Divisional Engineers; while a captain with Home Counties-Field Company in 1915, he was awarded the Military Cross.
