C. F. Trench was born on 29 July 1885 and educated at Charterhouse and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned in 1905, he served with the 7th Hariana Lancers in Mesopotamia at Kut and Ctesiphon and in the attempted relief of Kut.
