China - U.S.A. China Freedom Dollar (1989). Anti-Communist symbol and peripheral Chinese legend c/s on the obverse of a Chinese Yuan Shih-kai Dollar, year 3, on the reverse c/s "CHINA FREEDOM DOLLAR. SUPPORT THE FEDERATION. SAVE THE STUDENTS." After the Tian An Men Square massacre in Beijing in 1989, an organization, the Berkeley Chinese Students & Scholars Association (B.C.S.S.A.) was formed to assist Chinese exchange students stranded in the U.S. In order to raise funds, a small number of Chinese Silver Dollars and foreign Crowns current in China in the early 20th Century were countermarked and sold.
